This was one of our biggest jobs to date. Completely revamping the ceramic block for Swansea College of Art.
The Design
Swansea College of Art came to us to create a new mural. The graphic design department wanted to showcase a recent graduate. Huw had put together a unique design bursting with shapes and colour.
“This started off as an idea for a dissertation, part of a campaign I designed called Depart Stigma, the aim being to tackle stigma towards the creative industry. In my designs I wanted to spread a message of positivity surrounding creative pathways such as education and careers.”
After looking over his designs, we could tell this would be one for both our portfolios, with bright colours sitting against a rich black background.
The Mural
Beginning with the layout, we marked up a large doodle grid. Using this to overlay the design onto. After this Phil took to the skies in a cherry picker to map out the design and begin marking in the details. Swansea College of Art already had a mural on the building so we could use some of it as reference points.
Using spray paint to ensure the new design was easy to work to. Next came the colours. We started with the black paint as the previous mural was just as colourful.
To ensure the bold shapes and patterns were exact, a lot of brush work was needed. Missing none of the finer details. Working with the texture of the render to ensure good coverage. Mixing one off shades to match the smaller elements of the piece.
The finished pieces tie the sides of the builidng together. The rich black background unifying both designs. With clean areas of colour to punch through the deep black. If you enjoy the clean finish on this project check out this piece for Swansea University
