Pontardawe Town Council approached us with an exciting project to brighten up the town by painting a series of murals on electrical boxes scattered throughout the area. Each mural was to be designed to reflect different facets of Pontardawe’s rich heritage. Our mural artists got to work creating vibrant and engaging public art that resonates with the local community.
In 2023, Pontardawe Town Council won a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant from Neath Port Talbot County Council to deliver this project that celebrates the heritage of the town and the villages of Rhyd-y-Fro, Trebannws and Ynysmeudwy.
Croeso i Pontardawe
First in the series, this box features a beautifully detailed depiction of the historic Pontardawe bridge. Above the bridge, a majestic Welsh dragon soars. This design serves as a warm and festive welcome to visitors, and captures the essence of Welsh pride and heritage right at the entrance of the town.
Trebanos Rugby
Celebrating the town’s deep-rooted connection to rugby, this mural features a dynamic scene with Justin Tipuric, one of Pontardawe’s most celebrated rugby players. The artwork showcases Tipuric in action, supported by his home team, Trebanos RFC, highlighting the town’s passion for the sport and its pride in its local heroes.
Cadeirlan y Cym
This mural pays tribute to St Peter’s Church, one of Pontardawe’s most cherished landmarks. The 19th century church has a Decorated Gothic style.
Those Were The Days
This mural brings to life the lively tradition of Welsh folk dance. The design features dancers dressed in traditional Welsh clothing, including the distinctive tall hats, shawls, and woolen skirts. This piece celebrates the vibrant cultural traditions that have long been a part of Wales’ community celebrations.
These murals add a burst of colour and artistic flair to the town’s electrical boxes. What’s more, they also serve as a celebration of Pontardawe’s local heritage, sports culture, and community spirit. Each mural is thoughtfully designed, adding a beautiful pop of colour to the town. In addition, each design tells a story that resonates with its residents and visitors alike.
