Park Benches

Posted: 18th March 2018

Fresh Creative Co. was commissioned by Swansea council to paint 2 park benches that would be situated in Brynmill park and Cwndonkin park.

The brief was to include one design option from the Dylan Thomas Art Tour we worked on and one bench which we were to put together a design for.

We thought that the portrait of Dylan Thomas’s face was very iconic and this would be a great image to use.

The other design was decided to be a flora or fauna based theme  which would offer some vibrant colour and blend in with the parks surroundings.

PROCESS

The benches were dismantled and then sanded back using an orbital sander and staggereing levels of sandpaper.

Once the benches were nice and smooth we applied an undercoat and gave them another sand.

We then added two layers of primer and a base layer of  spraypaint before the design could be marked up.

The design was then marked up using Stabilo china pencils which can be easily removed.

The individual slats were quite a challenge to paint and for the design to work we had to space the bench slates out with consideration of the gaps.

Once we had finished the painting process we added a weather resistant lacquer to help keep the mural looking fresh over time.

FINISHED PIECES

The benches were put up by the cafe in Cwmdonkin park and by the lake in Brynmill park.

We hope you’ve enjoyed seeing the process behind the creation of these murals on the benches.
